The Best Chemical Exfoliant In Your Skincare Routine
Tarrah Bouts
Let’s cut to the chase! We all want to know what to use on our own skin! It is clear by the way that social media influencers are showcasing one product after the next. And now, we are even seeing doctors getting in on the action! It’s crazy to see this in my lifetime, after 20 years in the skincare and cosmetic industry! How do you react when you see a new product talked about or demonstrated, or those before and after photos from a chemical peel?
Even I am left in a “skincare hangover” at times, after being blasted with so much information. Then I find myself left with a choice, “Do I try that, since it worked for them?” OR, “I am just as confused as when I started watching TikTok/YouTube/Instagram/QVC!”
There are a lot of things to consider when adding in ANY active products (this is anything like a serum, or something that will actually create change inside of your skin, by the way!) If you want to learn more about the 3 FUNDAMENTAL products you should start with and why, you can read about that here. But let’s talk a little more in depth about Exfoliating Acids and if they should be in your routine somewhere.
If you want to know about professional chemical peels, you can learn more about a wide variety of AHA, BHA, and other forms of acids here. But today, we are talking about the best at home versions of “chemical peels” in your everyday routine (no worries of downtime with these suggestions, and we can even discuss some chemicals that are safe in pregnancy.)
The BEST exfoliating acids to have in your skincare routine are going to be something from the Alpha Hydroxy Acid family, also known as AHAs. I’m going to list them out quickly based on the largest molecule size to the smallest. The larger the molecule, the LESS visible exfoliation you should see, unless it is super strong, or if you use it with other certain ingredients, or apply it too frequently at the start!
· Mandelic Acid- Legit one of my faves and super accessible! It is derived from bitter almonds, so be mindful if you are allergic. However, most are synthetic derivatives, but still exercise caution. PERFECT for sensitive, acne, pigment, early aging, and safe for pregnant and breastfeeding.
· Lactic Acid- Maybe a second favorite for home use, but my all time favorite chemical peel to do as an esthetician. This can be amazing for sensitive skin, but some lactic formulas can be a little unpredictable (not the brand that we use, but I have seen instability in the pH with many pro brands!) Great for Pigment, Wrinkle/Aging Maintenance, minor breakout that is not consistent, and safe for pregnant and breastfeeding.
· Glycolic Acid- I’ve honestly never been a huge fan of glycolic acid until I recently started using a particular formula that is much more gentle! I do LOVE glycolic when it is used 2-3 times a week either alternating or layering with another active to increase your results! This can be a great way to boost a routine you are already acclimated to, but that is not always necessary. Glycolic is a really tiny molecule, so it can be irritating, and shouldn’t be used daily (exception being in a cleanser or toner on an oily skin type! But I would be more hesitant to use a daily serum!) I also would not recommend this for pregnant or breastfeeding. The likelihood of it harming a tiny human is small, but the irritating side affects coupled with unpredictable, hormonal skin can be bad!
Is this list all inclusive? NO WAY! There are a lot more AHAs, and they are also amazing, but these are my top 3, based on results, accessibility, stability, and studies! Are other acid families, like BHA or the newer PHA bad to use? Also NO! These can be wonderful for certain skin conditions! These 3 are tried, true, and tested, which makes me comfortable talking them up for real results!
