5 Must-Have Makeup Brushes for Beginners

Tarrah Bouts, Owner & Licensed Esthetician

Do you have makeup products that you’re not sure how to apply? Or maybe you use the same brush for every product? (We see you… and it’s time to put. the sponge. down. LOL!)

While there’s an array of tools out there for you to choose from, it can be a lot… especially for someone who is either new to makeup or new to using brushes.

Whichever the case may be for you, we’ve compiled a list of 5 brushes to have in your arsenal. Let’s begin!

Our recommendation for blending in foundation is the Sigma F80 Flat Kabuki Brush. This is great for beginners because of its ease of use. Whether you’re using a liquid or cream foundation, this brush leaves your skin with a blurred, airbrushed finish.

If you’re using any powder on your face, either under the eyes or setting all over, you’ll need a powder brush. We’re recommending the Sigma F10 Powder/Blush Brush. We love a 2-in-1! It gathers a great amount of product, and by being a bit smaller than the F30 Large Powder Brush, you’re able to get product under the eyes much easier.

Again with the duo-use brushes - they’re great for those just starting out. We’re recommending the Sigma F53 Air Contour/Blush Brush. This brush is great for adding color to the face, whether that be blush, bronzer, or contour! Being a duo fiber brush, you are able to gently and carefully build product onto your skin without fear of adding too much.

We’re keeping it simple with eyeshadow brushes, and only recommending two; the first being one to blend and build product into your crease. We recommend the Sigma E45 Small Tapered Blending Brush. This is perfect for getting right into your crease to add depth, and also works for blending out the rest of your shadow.

The truth is, you can never have too many blending brushes, which is why our second eyeshadow brush choice is the Sigma E40 Tapered Blending Brush. This is one slightly larger than the E45 shown above, and is amazing for softening and blending harsh lines between colors. This is a favorite at Amelia Gray!

We are so happy to be able to have each of these brushes available in our shop. Another great resource for you is asking our guest expert team for recommendations to use with products you already have and love. Each team member looks forward to educating and helping you learn about which products will help you feel confident and beautiful!
