Not Another New Year's Resolution (Skincare Edition)

Tarrah Bouts

We’ve all been there. It’s December 31 and you’ve decided to start fresh TOMORROW on those goals (right after you finish off the last of those Christmas cookies, you’ll think about your waistline and how the sugar impacts your skin. Am I right?)

Fast Forward 30 Days……..

80% of you will FAIL by February (yikes!) Sorry if that sounds harsh! But a quick Google search will prove me correct! While I am definitely NOT qualified to tell you about your fitness goals, I do carry a little street cred about the skincare resolutions!

One thing I have learned from watching all the millennial generation is that they live for the experience! And they love posting about these experiences, especially when it comes to self care! Do you know what I think about their social media posts…….. I think it is AMAZING! And we should all follow their lead!

What does a “millennial” have to do with YOUR New Year’s Resolutions? Follow me for just a minute and I’ll teach you what I’ve learned! I know for myself, I need to do something for at least 30 days to develop a good habit! And I’m also more likely to give up on something if I don’t enjoy it! (Am I alone here, or are you currently laughing because you are just like me?)

I’ve found that for myself and thousands of clients, our resolutions come from MOTIVATION. We want that end result!! Our intentions are good. The motivation is there. So we set the Resolution=Great skin this year! But then…..what happens by February? Why do 80% of us give up?

I’ve studied the 80/20 phenomenon (aka the Pareto Principle) in great length. I am a big believer. If 80% fail, that must mean that 20% will find success! This lead me to ask, “What is driving the 20%, if not just motivation, behind a resolution?” My thought: DISCIPLINE! That has to be it!!

Now, I could stop writing here, and just tell all of you that “you need to be more disciplined in your skincare products and treatments,” but tbh, I am not your mother. I can barely get my 11 year old to wash his hair! How can I be responsible for getting you to wash your face twice a day and use SPF? LOL! Of course, this made me put on my thinking cap!

Remember 3 paragraphs ago, when I said that I am more likely to give something up if I don’t enjoy it? That was a lightbulb moment! We don’t like skincare. For whatever reason. Maybe our product at home is mediocre. Or we just don’t understand what each thing is doing (which of course takes the rabbit hole of “do I need this? Maybe I’ll just quit using it.”). Or maybe, we are just so fall down tired from the everyday stress and demands, that we either crash and burn at the thought of that many steps in a routine; or we don’t find ourselves worthy of giving that time. (is this you? Because I feel this in my soul!)

So let’s figure it out! Talk to us as your Estheticians (we are Licensed Skin Experts, btw!) And let us help you figure out where you fall on this matter! Maybe you need a super streamlined routine (did you know my average client only uses 4 products morning and night?) Or you can’t break up with those makeup wipes, even though we see what they are doing to your skin? Let us coach you through a couple of free suggestions! And most importantly, please trash the resolution. Don’t focus on the end goal motivation. And if you’re in the 80%, forget the discipline. Let’s stay true to the millennial style, and make our skincare a RITUAL. 2 minutes in the morning, 2 in the evening. You are worth 4 minutes a day, for ritualistic, self care! Happy New Year!
